Erik's Guide to the Yucatan:
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Cancun

(and a few things you probably didn't!)

I've traveled to Cancun and the Yucatan Peninsula nine times since 1995, and I'll be back there again soon, I'm sure, if not just for a deal on a liver transplant.  I enjoy everything that that particular corner of the world has to offer, and I'm hoping to share my findings with y'all.

Not unlike a justification for the second war in Iraq, this guide is a work-in-progress.  Existing already are...

bulletTales from the Yucatan:  The story of my 9-day 1996 solo trip there.  A tale of adventure, passion, crime; an experience that would touch me in a way that I haven't been touched since I was touched that way that time.
bulletCancun:  The Photo Galleries, with a growing collection of pictures from, well, Cancun.

Upcoming portions you'll see if you check back soon (or later):

bulletReviews of hotels, restaurants, bars.  I have some favorites and there's some establishments that you definitely need to be warned of.
bulletMy patented CCI:  The Cancun Crime Index.  Based on my experiences, what are the odds of something unpleasant happening to you on your trip?
bulletMy also patented CPI:  The Cancun Price Index.  A legion of Nobel Prize-winning economists crunched numbers for weeks to come to the conclusion that as a whole, a trip to Cancun has become more expensive over the years.
bulletTop 10 Cancun hints, like how to get quickly through Customs, get quickly to your hotel, and get quickly intoxicated.  Also hints on renting cars, fun activities, and the #1 complete waste of time you need to avoid!
bulletYou can spend your dollars in Cancun.  You can speak your English.  But to clarify things, I'm working on a section we'll call something like "Really, This Isn't Florida," which will contain a crash course in all the important Spanish lingo you'll need to know.  Will contain recorded clips, too, and if they don't help you with your pronunciation, they'll at least make you sound like me.  And they'll be useful in Florida, too.

More detail to follow!  Enjoy!

Regarding my last trip there...

January 21, 2004:  Beware of SkyAuction's bait-and-switch tactics they employ in selling packages to an Oasis property in Cancun.  One moral of the story thus far:  I should have done some more research re SkyAuction's complaint record before buying.  Check back after my trip return (early February) to see whether SkyAuction will acknowledge and mend their deceptive ways.  You'll also find out just how bad the Oasis Cancun really is (which SkyAuction advertises as "Grand Turismo," but other travelers say  "terrible rooms, service and food," "horrible," "room flooded twice during rains," "no bathroom door," etc.)

Very last minute news:  SkyAuction cancelled the reservation within 24 hours of departure and say they've refunded the money to my credit card.  After numerous calls (sometimes I was hung up on), e-mails (that frequently went unreturned) and a fax to SkyAuction's President, looks like I'm getting my money back.  Now to find out who has last-minute availability...

I ended up getting a great last-minute deal at the Club Med in Cancun... more tales on that to follow!
